In December we saw almost exactly what we expected to see: a rise for demand in classic black formal wear! Sartorially speaking, December is best known as the party season, wherein Black Tie galas and balls are in high demand, and with them, black tie formal wear!
Of the ten slots available, classic black tuxedos took up six on December’s list. That’s more than half. To put that into perspective, during the summer, there was a month with only one classic black tuxedo on the top ten list, followed by a month where there were no classic black tuxedos at all. The dramatic difference is happily predictable every year, and follows events that follow weather patterns. During the summer, nobody wants to wear a hot black tuxedo, so other lighter options become predominant. But once the weather cools down and the holiday party season begins, classic is the rule that many events adhere to, and that means black and simple, and that means Black Tie.
An interesting side note is that, not only are there several Black Tie appropriate tuxedos on December’s top ten list, there are also two White Tie ensembles, representing an upturn of the very most formal of occasions!
But classic black tuxedos and tailcoats weren’t the only big trend observed in December. The other 4 remaining spots on the top ten list were all claimed by grey tuxedos and suits! As we’ve mentioned often before, grey tuxedos and suits are hugely popular and extremely versatile. In fact, they only events they aren’t appropriate for are black tie occasions. Because of this, we predict that grey will stay a popular color family year round.
Our prediction for the upcoming months is that black tuxedos and suits will remain a strong renters while the weather stays cold, as will grey tuxedos and suits, but we’ll also see more diversity in color families and styles as we get nearer to prom season. Closer to prom season and spring weddings, we’ll start seeing tan tuxedos and suits, and possibly even white and brown and the top ten charts. Keep checking in to stay current on the latest trends, and to see how close our predictions are!
