Traditionally, September marks two very important events in terms of formal trends. It marks the last dregs of summer and the beginning of fall.
Most of us consider September to be primarily a summer month, so the summer trends that have dominated the Top Ten Charts for majority of the year have continued as well. However, this does vary from last year’s trend.
You may notice that the Top Ten list for September looks a lot like the Top Ten list for August. And July. And June. And May. The same 10 styles have appeared on the Top 10 list for the past 4 months now. These styles have changed position here and there, but the same 8 Grey Tuxedos and Suits and 2 Tan Tuxedos and Suits have dominated the Top Ten charts for a full third of 2013. In fact, 5 of the top 10 styles this month are in exactly the same position as they were in August. But last year it was a different story.
Last year we had dominate styles throughout the summer months as well, but by September we started to see more variety on the top 10 charts, as is expected in the fall. We saw a good showing of grey tuxedos and suits, as well as the Tan Rapture, but we also had two brown tuxedos on the top 10 list, as well as two black tuxedos. So what does this change mean?
Looking at our reports, we actually are seeing a lot more variety in the styles that people are renting. If you extend the report to the Top 15 or 20, we would have midnight blue, black, and brown tuxedos and suits represented as well. That means that the fall trends are still building, but not enough to upset the powerhouse styles that have been present on the Top 10 charts through the summer.
While we could always be surprised, we fully expect a greater variety of styles to appear on the Top 10 chart in October, as fall trends continue to grow and take root. Among those trends, we can expect a return in popularity for black tuxedos and suits, and possibly some midnight blue options as well. Check back next month to see if we are right!
