Every month Paul Morrell Formalwear tracks the rental data for all of the tuxedo styles we offer and determines which 10 coats were the most rented for the previous month. This information is invaluable to businesses and consumers alike because everyone wants to know what’s in style right now. In a constantly changing and evolving environment, having up to date style information like this puts you way ahead of the curve.

As we’ve mentioned before, weather trends largely dictate formal trends. And because June marks the beginning of summer, it also shows us the first solid indicator of which styles are likely to be strong renters in the hotter months of the year.
Once again, Grey Tuxedos and Suits dominate the Top Ten Chart in May, claiming 8 out of 10 spots. This is the same 80% that grey tuxedos and suits claimed in May, and up from 70% last June. Also notable is the tuxedo in the top spot. Over the last year, the Steel Grey ‘Twilight’ Tuxedo by Jean Yves has been in the #1 spot 10 out of 12 months. The 2 months that it wasn’t, it was still in the #2 spot. So while grey tuxedos and suits are versatile enough to stay popular all year, the Steel Grey ‘Twilight’ Tuxedo is almost certainly going to be among the most popular styles all year long.
Tan Tuxedos and Suits represent the remainder of the chart, claiming the same 20% of the chart they claimed in May and last June. Tan tuxedos and suits are incredibly popular this time of year for destination weddings. The color matches the sandy tones that destination weddings are known for and also look great with the earth tones of a daytime garden wedding.
With 8 Grey tuxedos and suit, and 2 Tan tuxedos and suits, there’s no room left for any classic black tuxedos. It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean that black tuxedos aren’t worn this time of year. They are, and quite a few. But as a trend, they just aren’t nearly as popular as grey or tan when you factor in the summer heat. While it’s possible a black tuxedo or two may show up on the top ten charts this summer, we don’t expect to see any until the weather cools a bit.
